Description

About the Extension

The plugin assists in creating the Digital Product Passport (DPP).

What Information Should a Digital Product Passport (DPP) Contain?

The Digital Product Passport (DPP) includes a wide range of data, which can be expanded depending on the product group. The following fundamental information should be included:

  • Product Information: Details on the identity and origin of the product, including name, brand, model, batch number, manufacturing date, and warranty conditions.

  • Material Composition: Information about the materials used, their properties, and details on raw material sources and suppliers involved.

  • Sustainability Aspects: Data on environmental impact, including the carbon footprint during production, use, and disposal.

  • Repair Information: Insights into the product’s repairability, including past repairs and their reasons.

  • Ownership History: If applicable, records of current and previous owners, particularly for resold products.

  • Standardized Identification Features: Global product identifiers such as GTIN (according to ISO/IEC 15459-6) and trade codes like the TARIC code (Regulation (EEC) No 2658/87).

  • Manufacturer and Importer Information: Identification of the manufacturer, contact details, and a unique identifier of the EU-based economic operator responsible for market surveillance. Additionally, importer details, including their EORI number.

  • User Information: Provision of user manuals, safety instructions, and warnings in compliance with relevant legal requirements.

Legal Basis of the EU Regulation

The foundation for the Digital Product Passport is Regulation (EU) 2024/1781, adopted as part of the European Green Deal. The new Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR) establishes specific requirements for sustainable products. It was approved by the European Parliament in April 2024 and formally adopted by the Council of the European Union in May 2024. The regulation was published in the Official Journal of the European Union on June 28, 2024, and came into force on July 18, 2024.

Affected Products and Industries

According to a publication by the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety, and Consumer Protection (BMUV), the Digital Product Passport is mandatory for various product groups in Germany. Additionally, other sustainability-relevant products, such as those containing batteries, construction materials, and chemical products, may also be included. The automotive and mechanical engineering industries, particularly regarding spare parts, are significantly impacted.

Mandatory product groups include:

  • Energy-Related Products: Household appliances, office equipment, consumer electronics, and lighting

  • Large Electrical and Electronic Devices: Televisions, refrigerators, washing machines, dishwashers, and air conditioners

  • Textiles: Clothing, shoes, and bedding

  • Packaging: Plastic, metal, paper, and cardboard packaging

  • Household Products: Furniture, mattresses, cleaning, and laundry detergents

  • Craft and Industrial Products: Tires, paints and coatings, lubricants, iron, steel, and aluminum

The introduction of the Digital Product Passport aims to create a more transparent and sustainable value chain.
