Check VAT ID – configuration guide
==================================
Important notice
The check is performed via an external service. We therefore cannot guarantee the accuracy of the
results. The app supports you with the check but does not replace your own duty of care: please
carefully verify the VAT ID, company data and addresses yourself as well – especially before a
tax-free delivery.
1. Requirements
---------------
- Shopware 6.6 or 6.7. In-app purchases (Plus/Premium) require Shopware 6.6.9 or later.
- Under Settings → Login/registration, enable "Show selection between business and private account".
Only then can customers register a business account with a VAT ID.
- Accept the requested permissions when installing or updating the app. Without them, the check
result, status tags and the "Check VAT ID now" button cannot work.
You find the configuration under Extensions → My extensions → Check VAT ID → Configure.
2. Card "Configuration"
-----------------------
Active
Switches the check on. Without this option the app checks neither during registration nor at checkout.
Registration and edit profile only with valid VAT ID
Business customers can only register or save their profile with a valid VAT ID.
If switched off, registration and profile are not blocked.
Order only with valid VAT ID
Business customers can only order with a valid VAT ID. A business customer is anyone with the
account type "business", a company name or a VAT ID in the customer account.
Re-check orders automatically (Premium)
If the validation service was unavailable when the order was placed, the VAT ID is re-checked
automatically every hour and the check result is added to the order. Only effective with Premium.
Convert VAT ID to upper case while typing
Converts e.g. "se123…" to "SE123…" while typing. Recommended if you use the VAT ID pattern in the
country settings, as Shopware distinguishes upper and lower case there.
Allow registration if VAT ID is empty / Allow order if VAT ID is empty
Business customers may register or order without a VAT ID. If a VAT ID is entered, it is still checked.
Ignore the check for the following countries
No check takes place for these countries, e.g. non-EU countries such as Switzerland or Norway.
The country of the address counts during registration, the shipping country at checkout.
Tax-free order: show checkout notice except for the following shipping countries
Shows the notice about tax-free orders at checkout, except for the selected shipping countries
(usually your own country).
Tax-free order: show checkout notice in css class
Position of the notice at checkout. Default: .checkout-container .checkout-aside-action
Only change this if your theme has a different structure.
Service request timeout ms
How long the shop waits for the check result (default 5000 = 5 seconds). After that the validation
service is considered unavailable.
3. Card "Messages"
------------------
All notices your customers see are text snippets and can be customised per language.
Placeholders that should be kept:
- %company%, %street%, %zipcode%, %city%, %country%: value from the check
- %buttonYes% (English) or %buttonJa% (German): button the customer uses to apply the value
- in "Error message if shipping address not equal with VAT ID address" also the shipping address
placeholders such as %companyShipping% and %countryShipping%
Particularly important:
- "Notice if service not available": shown if the validation service does not respond and
registration or ordering is not allowed in that case.
4. Card "Advanced Configuration"
--------------------------------
Autofill if empty with VAT ID data
Fills empty fields (company, street, zip code, city, country) during registration with the data
from the check, if the validation service provides it.
Allow register with different shipping address to VAT ID address
The address is not compared with the company data during registration.
Allow registration if return address from VAT ID is empty
Allow registration if the validation service returns no address. Recommended, as this is the case
for many countries (e.g. Germany).
Registration country must be equal to VAT ID country
The country of the address must match the country of the VAT ID.
Allow registration if service not available
If the validation service is unavailable, the customer can still register. Otherwise the notice
from the "Messages" card is shown.
Allow order if shipping address is different to VAT ID address
The shipping address is not compared with the company data at checkout.
Allow order if return address from VAT ID is empty
Allow the order if the validation service returns no address. Recommended (see above).
Shipping country must be equal to VAT ID country
At checkout the shipping country must match the country of the VAT ID.
Ignore address check in checkout if tax will be paid
If VAT is charged (no tax-free delivery), the address is not compared at checkout.
Allow order if service not available
If the validation service is unavailable, the customer can still order. The order is then marked
as "unverified" and can be checked later: with the "Check VAT ID now" button or automatically
with Premium.

6. In the Shopware admin
------------------------
Orders → VAT ID check
Your plan, checks this month, status of the automatic re-check, unverified orders and the latest
orders with a VAT ID (green valid, yellow address differs, red invalid, grey unverified).
This is also where you book Plus and Premium. Reopen the module after a purchase.
In the order
- Custom field "VAT ID status": result, time and history in readable form
- Tags, e.g. "USt-Id gültig / VAT ID valid" or "USt-Id ungeprüft / VAT ID unverified",
filterable in the order list
- "Check VAT ID now" button: shows the stored result with history. "Check now" checks again and
updates the order.
7. Check quota
--------------
- Free 300, Plus 1,000, Premium 5,000 checks per month, higher volumes on request.
- Every check counts, including a repeated check of the same VAT ID.
- Once the monthly limit is reached, further checks until the end of the month are handled as if the
validation service were unavailable. The "Allow … if service not available" options then apply.
8. FAQ
------
The check does not start at checkout.
Make sure "Active" and "Order only with valid VAT ID" are switched on and the customer counts as a
business customer (account type "business", company name or VAT ID in the customer account).
Clear the shop cache after updating the app.
A valid German VAT ID is marked as "address differs".
For German VAT IDs the validation service usually returns no address. Enable
"Allow … if return address from VAT ID is empty".
Customers cannot save a VAT ID in lower case.
Enable "Convert VAT ID to upper case while typing".
