VAT ID Validation & Bulk Risk Check – Comprehensive Liability Protection

Real-time VAT ID validation via BZSt & VIES, automated address suggestions, and customer base risk assessment.

This extension provides a professional solution for minimizing tax risks in B2B commerce. The plugin not only ensures the validation of VAT identification numbers but also enhances data quality through automated address suggestions. If the data entered by a customer deviates from the official corporate records, correct address data is offered for selection (provided the interface returns such data).

Depending on specific risk management requirements, the system can be configured to handle orders with invalid or unverified VAT IDs in three ways:

Block Order: The checkout process is prevented.
Fallback to Gross: The order is automatically calculated including VAT (treated as a retail customer).
Net under Reserve: The order is permitted tax-free but is clearly flagged in the administration for manual review.

An intelligent caching system minimizes redundant server requests and ensures fast loading times within the storefront.

Comprehensive Liability Protection & Bulk Checker

In addition to real-time validation (registration, cart, and checkout), the integrated Bulk Checker allows for an analysis of the entire existing customer base. A calculated Tax Risk Score identifies potential financial liabilities caused by outdated or incorrect master data, serving as a reliable record for internal and external audits.

Official Interfaces (BZSt & VIES)

Validation is performed exclusively through official government interfaces:

BZSt (Federal Central Tax Office): Recommended for German shop operators to ensure legal compliance during tax audits.
VIES (EU Commission): For validating European VAT identification numbers.

Technical Notes: Neither BZSt nor VIES support the validation of German VAT IDs for purely domestic transactions (DE to DE). Furthermore, some countries (e.g., Spain) do not transmit address data via VIES due to data protection regulations, which means address suggestions cannot be generated for those regions.

Automation with Flow Builder

The plugin utilizes the CustomField melom_vat_id_status on the customer record for flexible Flow Builder automation. For example, upon successful registration, an automatic assignment to a Net Customer Group can be triggered, ensuring that tax-free prices are immediately visible.
