Getting Started

After installation, open Content in the Shopware Administration sidebar and click CMS Block Builder.

Open CMS Block Builder from the Content menu
Click Create Block
Choose a preset layout or draw your own areas on the grid
Click each area to assign a CMS element
Name your block, pick a category, and click Save
Your block appears in the CMS editor block picker

Plugin Configuration:

Default Category
The pre-selected category when creating a new block. Options: Custom, Text and Image, Commerce, Video. Default: Custom.

Max Columns Per Row
Maximum number of columns per row in the block composer grid. Default: 6.

Block Library

The block library shows all your custom blocks in a searchable, sortable table.

Name - Display name. Click to open the detail page.
Technical Name - Unique identifier. Cannot be changed after creation.
Category - Block picker category.
Active - Toggle to enable or disable the block.
Created - When the block was created.

Actions per row:

Edit - Open the block detail page.
Duplicate - Create a copy. The copy is inactive by default.
Delete - Remove the block. Only if not used on any CMS page.

Creating a New Block

Block Name (required)
The display name shown in the CMS block picker.

Technical Name (required, locked after creation)
A unique identifier using lowercase letters and hyphens.

Category (required)
Determines where the block appears in the CMS block picker.

Position
Sort order within the category. Lower numbers appear first.

Active
Toggle to make the block available. Default: On.

Before saving:

Block Name and Technical Name must be filled in
Technical Name must be unique
At least one area must be drawn on the grid
Every area must have a CMS element assigned

Block Composer

A visual 12-column grid where you design your block layout.

Preset Layouts:

Full Width (1 Column)
2 Columns
Sidebar Left
Sidebar Right
3 Columns
4 Columns

Drawing Custom Areas:

Click and drag on the grid to draw a rectangular area
Release the mouse to confirm
Click the area to assign a CMS element
Areas can span multiple columns and rows but cannot overlap

Managing Areas:

Hover and click the swap icon to change the element
Hover and click X to remove the area
Use Add Row and Remove Row buttons below the grid
Clear All removes all areas

All Shopware CMS elements can be used: Text, Image, Video, Product Box, Product Slider, Image Gallery, Category Navigation, Forms, and elements from other plugins.

Responsive Breakpoints

Desktop - Primary layout. All element assignments happen here.
Tablet - Can reposition areas but cannot change elements.
Mobile - Same as Tablet.

Elements are shared across all breakpoints. If no Tablet or Mobile layout is defined, the Desktop layout is used.

Using Blocks in the CMS Editor

Open any Shopping Experiences layout
Click the Blocks tab in the right sidebar
Select the category of your block
Drag your custom block into the layout
Configure each element as usual

Custom blocks are compatible with any theme and survive Shopware updates.

Structure Locking

When a block is used on CMS pages, its structure is automatically locked.

Locked: Adding or removing areas, rows, presets, and clear all.

Still allowed: Swapping element types, changing block name, category, position, and active status.

Blocks in use cannot be deleted. The dialog shows which pages reference the block.

Permissions

Assign roles under Settings, System, Users and Permissions.

Viewer - View block library and details.
Editor - Edit settings and layouts. Requires Viewer.
Creator - Create and duplicate blocks. Requires Viewer and Editor.
Deleter - Delete unused blocks. Requires Viewer.

Do I need any coding knowledge?

No. If you can drag and drop in the Shopware CMS editor, you can use CMS Block Builder.

Which CMS elements can I use?

All of them — text, image, product listing, product slider, video, category navigation, and any elements from other plugins.

Will my custom blocks survive Shopware updates?

Yes. Custom blocks use standard Shopware CMS elements underneath, so they are update-safe.

Can I edit a saved block?

Yes. But only the element positioning/ grid layout will reflect the change. Elements used within the block will only change on newly created CMS pages.

How many blocks can I create?

Unlimited.

Does this work with my theme?

Yes. Since custom blocks render using standard CMS elements, they are compatible with any Shopware theme.
