Your warehouse picks boxes by feeling. Your carrier charges you for the air.

The average e-commerce parcel is around 40% empty space. Staff reach for the familiar big carton, the filler goes in, and the dimensional-weight surcharge lands on your invoice. Meanwhile the EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR, Regulation 2025/40) caps empty space in e-commerce parcels at 50% — from January 2030 at the earliest, with filling material counted as empty space.

PackGuard puts packaging under control, directly in your Shopware admin:

Smart box suggestion: for every order, PackGuard calculates the product volume and recommends the smallest box from your catalog that fits — shown on the order detail page, where your team confirms the box with one click.
Empty-space monitoring: three configurable thresholds — track, warn, block. Orders above the warning threshold are flagged; at the block threshold the box selection is rejected, with a manual override for documented exceptions.

When do the EU packaging rules actually take effect?

Regulation (EU) 2025/40 applies from 12 August 2026. Its 50% empty-space limit for e-commerce packaging (Article 24) applies from 1 January 2030 at the earliest, and filling material counts as empty space. PackGuard lets you measure and reduce empty space well before that. It does not issue the EU declaration of conformity, which packaging manufacturers draw up.

Do product variants with different dimensions work?

Yes. PackGuard reads Shopware's standard dimension fields, which can be set per variant — a size S and a size XXL of the same product can carry different length, width, height and weight values.

Do I need external services or API keys to use this plugin?

No. PackGuard runs entirely within your Shopware 6 installation. All calculations happen locally; there are no recurring API fees and no third-party dependencies.

Does PackGuard change my shipping rates or print carrier labels?

No. PackGuard guides the box decision in the admin and records the result. It does not modify shipping costs, carrier billing or labels — your existing shipping setup stays exactly as it is.

How does the smart box suggestion work?

PackGuard calculates the total volume of all items in an order, applies the packaging-profile constraints of the products involved, and recommends the smallest box in your catalog that fits — including the resulting empty-space ratio. The suggestion appears on the order detail page.

What happens when an order exceeds the block threshold?

The box selection is rejected and the order is recorded as a violation. An authorised user can manually override the block for justified exceptions — the override is stored, so the audit trail stays complete.
