A customer is laying laminate in the living room. The floor area is 26 square metres, that much is known. The number of packs is not. So the sum happens in their head, rounds down and ends as an order two packs short. The second delivery costs you the postage and your customer another week on a building site.
The problem
Goods sold by area or by length arrive in packs. Between what your customer needs and what you ship sits a piece of arithmetic they have to do themselves. Some get it wrong. Some close the tab and buy elsewhere.
Almost nobody allows for the offcut lost while fitting. What stays with you are support calls, replacement deliveries at your cost and returns of material that was never needed.
The solution
The plugin adds an input field to the buy area of the product page, labelled with the unit of the article: "Required square metres". Your customer types in their figure. The plugin adds the offcut, divides by the pack content, rounds up to whole packs and writes the result into the quantity field. Underneath, a "Total" line shows how much material they actually get.
What's in it for you
Fewer wrong orders. Your customer stops doing the maths. That removes the replacement deliveries that cost you postage and cost your customer time.
Fewer abandoned baskets. Anyone who has to look for a calculator often does not buy at all. The calculation happens while your customer types, with no click and no page reload.
The offcut nobody remembers. You store your own figure once, five percent for example. From then on every customer gets the reserve added. If you want, your customer can switch it off or type a value of their own, because they know their laying pattern better than you do.
Your prices stay the way your ERP holds them. If you maintain prices per square metre, the plugin derives the pack price and shows both, including the struck through price and the "previously" figure a price reduction needs. You do not have to rebuild your price list.
Only switched on where it fits. Every setting works globally, per article or per unit of measurement. And each sales channel has its own switch: on in the retail shop, off in the trade channel.
How the plugin works
The article needs two values Shopware already knows: a unit of measurement and a packaging unit, for example square metres and 2.5 square metres per pack.
From there the arithmetic is plain. Your customer enters 26 square metres, the offcut is set to five percent. That makes 27.3 square metres, divided by 2.5 gives 10.92 packs, rounded up to 11. The quantity field shows 11, the line below reads "Total: 27.5 m²". That quantity is what goes into the basket.
If your customer only knows the room, you show two extra fields for width and length. The plugin multiplies them and fills in the area itself. Numbers appear in the notation of the storefront language, so a British shop reads 27.5 and a German one 27,5.
Typical use cases
Floor coverings. Laminate, engineered wood, vinyl, carpet tiles. Enter the room area, get the packs, offcut included.
Tiles and natural stone. Sold by the square metre, delivered by the box. This is where the free offcut field earns its keep, because breakage and cutting depend heavily on the laying pattern.
Rolls and running metres. Turf, membrane, fencing, cable. Instead of square metres you store metres as the unit, the arithmetic stays the same.
Consumables. For paint, adhesive or primer you enter the demand per unit on the article, 0.2 litres per square metre for instance. Your customer still enters the area and gets the number of tins.
Technical facts for your IT team
The plugin runs on Shopware 6.7 with PHP 8.2 or newer and needs the Storefront. It creates no tables of its own and changes none of Shopware's. Settings live in the plugin configuration per sales channel, the article level switches as custom fields on the product and on the unit, all prefixed "area_calc_six_".
The calculation in the buy area runs in the browser, without an extra request to the server. On the server the plugin decorates the price calculation. It reads each unit of measurement once and keeps it in memory rather than reading it per product, so a category page with 48 tiles does not trigger 48 queries. A query budget test holds that in place.
The plugin sends no data to external servers. There are no trackers, no outbound interface and no personal data stored by the plugin. The demand your customer entered stays on the order line, so the basis of the quantity is still readable later.
When you uninstall, Shopware asks whether your data should be kept. Say no and the plugin removes its configuration and its custom fields. Interface and settings ship in English, German and Dutch.
To be honest
This plugin counts quantities. It does not plan laying patterns, it does not optimise cuts and it is no replacement for a proper survey. If your customers have to calculate rooms with angles and recesses, you need something else for that.
It also only acts on articles that carry a unit of measurement and a packaging unit. Leave those two fields empty and the product page stays exactly as it is. Try it on a single article, it takes less than five minutes.

Berechnungen stimmen nicht
das Plugin zeigt als Ergebnis allerdings bei 2 Pakete Inhalt = 1,63qm was sich dann immer weiter noch oben potenziert sich je mehr der Kunde an Quadratmetern eingibt. Wenn das Korrigiert wird gibt's auch volle Punktzahl :-)
