AVIF and WebP - AVIF and WebP image optimization

Rating: 5.0

Average rating of 5 out of 5 stars

Downloads: <50

Description

Highlights

  • AVIF and WebP files for every JPG and PNG in the media folder and in all thumbnail sizes
  • Browsers without AVIF get WebP, browsers without WebP get the original file
  • Convert with a button in the admin, by scheduled task every five minutes or with five console commands
  • Overview page with progress bar, converted, pending and failed counters and an estimate of the remaining time
  • Runs stop before max_execution_time or memory_limit are reached and continue at the same position

Features

  • Separate quality values for full size images and for thumbnails, individually for AVIF and for WebP
  • JPG and PNG conversion can be switched on or off separately for each format
  • src, srcset and sizes are filled with the converted files, images without a converted file keep their original URL
  • Optional lazy loading that stays eager for gallery, slider, zoom and magnifier images
  • Optional height correction for images inside the gallery slider
  • Base URL for the generated image URLs can be set globally or per sales channel
  • All convertible files are indexed in the database with an own status for AVIF and for WebP
  • Changed source images are recognised by their modification date and queued for conversion again
  • Converted files that already exist are detected while indexing, so no image is processed twice
  • Searchable file list with format filter, status filter and a convert button per file and format
  • Error log with file, format, message and date, plus a retry action that queues all failed files again
  • Cleanup for index entries and generated files of deleted source images, with a dry run option on the console
  • One image including all of its thumbnails can be regenerated directly from the media sidebar
  • Delete action for all generated files with a counter of the remaining files and a cache reminder
  • Transparency of PNG files is preserved, SVG and non image files are never touched

About the Extension

Every JPG and PNG file in the media folder and in all thumbnail directories gets an AVIF and a WebP counterpart, written next to the original file. The original stays untouched, so nothing is lost and you can delete the generated files again at any time.

In the storefront the image tag is filled with the converted files, including srcset and sizes for all thumbnail sizes. If a converted file does not exist yet, the original URL is used, so no image ever breaks while the conversion is still running. Browser support is checked on page load: without AVIF support the image is switched to WebP, without WebP support it falls back to the original JPG or PNG. Logos in generated documents keep their original format.

Conversion runs where it suits you. In the settings you convert batch by batch with a button, the scheduled task processes one batch per format every five minutes, and for large media libraries there are five console commands for indexing, converting, checking, status and cleanup. Every run watches max_execution_time and memory_limit, stops before they are reached, tells you why it stopped and continues at exactly the same position on the next run.

A separate overview page under Content shows the whole picture: a progress bar, counters for converted, pending and failed files, the split between media and thumbnails, an estimated remaining time for both manual clicking and the scheduled task, and the status of the last task run with phase, start, end and duration. From the file list you can search, filter by format and status and convert single files. Failures land in an error log with the exact message and can be queued again in one click. Single images that a server cannot handle can be skipped, files above 200 MB are reported instead of killing the run, and if the PHP GD build has no AVIF support you are warned in the admin and on the console instead of getting silent failures. A debug option writes the expected file path into the image tag. The administration is available in German and English.

Important: To use this plugin you must be using at least PHP 8.1 so that the PHP function imageavif() is available.

After creating the images, please clear the cache so that the converted images are displayed in the frontend.
